Defending the Desert’s Waters
Advocacy
Setting a New Standard
One of our most effective ways of stopping pollution is to advocate for higher standards in water quality permits. Waterkeeper will regularly meet with the Colorado River Regional Water Quality Control Board and discuss progressive solutions for industrial and agricultural sites. Waterkeeper advocates on behalf of the Coachella Valley community, including historically disadvantaged groups such as immigrant farming communities and local tribes along the watershed.
Enforcement
Holding Polluters Accountable
Setting higher water standards is only one half of the battle. Our team will use the Clean Water Act, as well as other state and federal regulations, to protect our fellow residents of Coachella Valley. Where necessary, our full-time staff attorneys will intervene in administrative actions and represent our members in citizen suits.
Restoration
Protecting Desert Wildlife
Waterkeeper fights to support restoration efforts that support our health and water quality. A huge area of concern for our team is the Salton Sea. These projects can range from creek cleanups to long-term ecosystem restoration initiatives. This work cannot be done alone, that’s why we need help from volunteers, students, science centers, educational institutions and local partners.
Conservation
Preserving Our Home for Future Generations
Coachella Valley’s water supply is facing increased demand. We hope to conserve the local watershed by implementing all of the previously mentioned programs as well as educating the public on drought tolerant landscaping and water-saving techniques.
Education
Creating Tomorrow’s Water Defenders
Learning about environmental issues at a young age is the best way to form sustainable life-long habits. Our organization works with local schools to organize water-testing demonstrations, visits to local watershed areas, and clean-up days. We work with students at all levels of schooling, from elementary to graduate level.
